June fishing
From Shell Island Fish Camp most of our fisherman have been fishing the west flats. Some nice catches of trout, mackerel, and blues have come in. Many of the trout caught have been the big ones that you need not measure and can brag about back at the dock. Lot of folks are having a blast with the cobia. They are floating a live bait fish behind the boat while drifting the flats for trout, when one hits the fun is on. As usual in the hot weather, the sharks and catfish are plentiful, too. These are an aggravation to the serious fisherman but can be great fun for the kids or anyone fisherman who just wants to catch something.
They best fish are being caught on live shrimp but shrimp will become harder and harder to get as we go further into summer. Frozen shrimp will work even though they are hard to keep on the hook. For artificial bait try a gulp with a very light head (1/16 oz.) on the bottom. Fish it just like a shrimp, do not work (jig) it. Try dragging it on the bottom and pick it up and let it drop back to the bottom.
The weather is mighty hot making it hard to sit out on the water all day. Boats are going out early (6 AM) and returning mid-day.
Scallops have been spotted down east behind black rock. They should be working their way up the coast towards the flats off St. Marks Lighthouse.
